Bosco Adds National Titles To Banner Year

Samantha Bosco, a 2016 Paralympian who won two world championships and was unbeaten in world cup racing this year in road cycling, added a pair of national track titles to her banner year on Sept. 9 and 10 in Carson, California.

Bosco, a two-time medalist in the Paralympic Games Rio 2016, dominated the time trial and road race C4 to complete a perfect season in which she won both races in all three world cup stops.

“No pun intended, but it’s the rainbow after the storm for me,” said Bosco, who has recovered from a head injury sustained in a bike crash last year that kept her out of the Tokyo Games. “It’s a really sweet and surreal moment for me.”

Paralympian Sam Bosco (Claremont, California) repeated her perfect performance from the time trial win dominating the women’s C4 road race at the final day of the road world championships to collect her second rainbow jersey of the week. Bosco led the entire six lap course from the start clocking in nearly three and a half minutes earlier than the silver medalist. Bosco’s win brings her career world championship medal tally to 12 with her double wins in Canada being her first world titles on the road.

We were likewise thrilled to meet Sam Bosco, a bronze medal-winning Paralympic cyclist. Sam began biking as a child, riding to school with her dad. “I loved how I felt when I conquered a trail, especially if it was a harder trail, because I could take on anything that I put my mind to.” In middle school, she underwent multiple corrective bone surgeries that required long and difficult recoveries, but did not suppress her spirit. She credits her parents with “reminding me and instilling in me that just because I have a disability does not mean I’m incapable of something.”

But with the same bravery and determination that enabled her to overcome a botched surgery at the age of 11 that left her on crutches, she has decided that she is going for the gold at the Paralympics in Paris in 2024. She and her husband Andrew tell her inspirational story.

Delighted to have 2x Paralympic Bronze medalist Samantha Bosco join us to share her life story of overcoming numerous obstacles in order to reach her dreams. It is great to have professional athletes join the show so we can get more literal examples of the “athlete mindset”, but so much of Sam’s story sheds light on the trying times athletes deal with, which is just as valuable as hearing about the successes.

Samantha Bosco's story is nothing short of true inspiration. However, her journey has switched courses in the last couple of weeks. Shortly after finding out she made Team USA and would be heading to Tokyo for the Olympics, she's now focusing on recovering from a cycling accident.

Sam Bosco has been an athlete her entire life. She was born with a bowed tibia. She is a Paralympic cyclist who has attended twelve world championships and received ten medals. She went to the Rio Paralympics in 2016, earning our country two bronze medals. She has made the team going to Tokyo in 2021.

“Because I’m super competitive, I feel like I’m at a point in my career and really in my life that I’m assessing how I’m doing compared to past performances of myself and I feel like it’s so up in the air as far as what everybody else is doing as far as not having races against people in a while,” Bosco said.

We speak about Samantha's journey from dealing with her disability and chronic pain growing up, to eventually finding paracycling and becoming a professional cyclist. She also shares her advice for how to deal with adversity, based on the numerous challenges she has faced throughout her career, and explains the huge difference that surrounding yourself with the right people can make. For Samantha, sports has been a means for strength and power and today she wants to be an inspiration and help change lives by sharing her story with others.

“I want to be strong, i want to be fit. I want to be a world champion, not a number on a scale.”

“I was bummed to say the least that it got postponed, but at the same time, I think it’s kind of a blessing in disguise,” said Bosco. “It made me go back to the basics, because as an athlete, you have to maintain some sort of fitness throughout your whole career.”

“When I was younger and cycling was kind of taken away after all of the surgeries, I got my first real taste that maybe not all of my dreams were achievable. There was always that dream within grasp and not necessarily getting to achieve it, so for me Rio was the chance that I had to actually achieve a dream so that alone was something that I’ll truly treasure for the rest of my life.”

I was nine years old when I decided I wanted to be a professional mountain bike racer and travel the world to race my bike along root-filled dirt paths between patches of forests, hills and switchbacks. That is, I did until I was 11.

Team USA’s Samantha Bosco had plenty to say after winning gold and taking the C1-C5 women’s 500-meter time trial in 39.601 seconds at the 2019 Parapan American Games on Aug. 26 in Peru. Bosco, a former rower turned cyclist, was ecstatic.
